It is possible to have both design and function in door handles and lock sets, especially the ones on your main entrance. Many shops, brick-and-mortar or online, offer a full range of designs for door handles, from antique to modern minimalist. If you have a Victorian or other traditional type of home, you might want to try a glass door knob to add elegance and highlight your architectural design. Your minimalist home, meanwhile, would look very chic in any type of chrome door handles, whether in satin or polished finish. With the right design, this little piece of hardware can definitely make a big impact. Once you have installed your door accessories, you should, of course, maintain them properly, too. Make sure your door locks and latches are aligned properly and can be easily opened and closed. If you keep using misaligned locks and latches, you will not only destroy the hardware, but you may also be locked inside or outside your house or your room.
The style of the door is very important and most handles are made to fit a particular door style. A good strategy is to choose a handle that complements the style of the door, so that it stands out not diminishing the style of the door too. For example, slick doors do not go with antique door handles. If the door is not at a very common place at home or not to be used a lot, simple handles are good options. Types of handles also depend on the area of residence. For example homes based near the ocean tend to get rust on everything specially the doors and the door handles, stainless steel handles are made for such houses.
Before proceeding with the door handle replacement project, you should collect your tools at one place and open the door slightly. Check the interior sides of the handle to find the screws. If you do not find the screws, then the door handle head should be popped-off using a flathead screwdriver. The screwdriver head should be inserted into the side slot and turned slightly. The cover on the handle will come-off exposing the screw. The screw can be turned and removed. This should be done for both sides of the handle - inside as well as outside. Then the screws on the strike plate are removed from the side of the door and then the latch is removed. In case of screen doors and storm doors, you can skip this step. The next step in door handle replacement is to take a measurement of the distance between the side of the door and the holes. This distance is called 'back set' and it can help you to make sure that the new handles will work properly with the door.
