Before proceeding with the door handle replacement project, you should collect your tools at one place and open the door slightly. Check the interior sides of the handle to find the screws. If you do not find the screws, then the door handle head should be popped-off using a flathead screwdriver. The screwdriver head should be inserted into the side slot and turned slightly. The cover on the handle will come-off exposing the screw. The screw can be turned and removed. This should be done for both sides of the handle - inside as well as outside. Then the screws on the strike plate are removed from the side of the door and then the latch is removed. In case of screen doors and storm doors, you can skip this step. The next step in door handle replacement is to take a measurement of the distance between the side of the door and the holes. This distance is called 'back set' and it can help you to make sure that the new handles will work properly with the door.
In terms of materials used, these are the types of handles commonly found in use. Cast Brass - can be copper finished; nickel or chrome plated; bright satin finished; antique finished. Cast or sheet aluminium alloy - usually anodized; with matt, dyed, satin bright or natural finishes. Metal sheet - can be copper oxidized or stove enameled finish, both black. Wooden handle - made of solid wood with some intricate and ornate carvings in base plate (in lever latch types). Others are plain solid wood for a minimalist design.
Although often coated with hardwearing finishes, iron based products will always be susceptible to rust. To reduce the likelihood of this, make sure to remove any harmful deposits that may lead to corrosion occurring, and wipe over the door handle from time to time with a light oil applied with a soft cloth. If you can avoid doing the following, you'll help extend the life of your door handles: Don't hang excessive weight from the handle e.g. full shopping bags. Don't allow children to hang from or play with the handle. Don't use the handle as a door stop against a wall - far better to install a door stop to prevent the door handle banging against the wall (you can find some great ones here). So to keep your door handles, door pulls and door furniture looking like new, a few minutes cleaning and care every couple of months or so will have a significant impact on the long term maintenance requirements of your products.
