Door Handles. Tuesday , September 11th , 2018 - 01:49:58 AM
Door handle is an ambiguous term, and includes door latches, bars, and knobs. Depending on the geographical location and its place in time, they vary in design, form and materials. The only constant is its function: an attachment used to open or close a door. The earliest doors extant are approximately 5000 years old. Door handles, as devices to manipulate a gateway, became a necessity shortly after the invention of the pivoting mechanism. To most, pivots are simply known as hinges, however, there are nearly as many hinge designs and configurations as there are handles. The simplest handle is a pull - or push - projection on the side opposite the hinge. The placement of the handle is generally where it will provide an optimal mechanical advantage; most doors operating as second class levers. Doors with centre pulls or rings, or a pivot point in a location other than one edge of the door, use first or third class lever principles.
Door handles such as the Velum have been designed with home owners in mind. This very curvaceous example of the lever-makers art is a simple piece of metal which extends from the shaft of the handle out towards the centre of the door. The handle extends about 128mm from edge to edge, and is designed to have a very comfortable fit. This handle has been created in brushed nickel with chrome additions, making it an attractive metallic accessory for your home. It also has fittings such as a heavy duty latch and some escutcheons which are designed to match and flatter the shape of the Velum handles.
When you consider that some 120 million doorways exist in the United States alone and another two million are installed each year, you can only imagine the vast number of door knobs. Going back in history, doors were initially made from textiles and animal hides. However, during the ancient Mesopotamia and Egyptian era, wooden doors were developed. Soon, materials for making doors expanded to include stone, glass, metal, and even paper. Doors throughout history have also changed regarding functionality. For instance, we still find doors of all types, those that roll, slide, swing, and fold. Of course, for doors to function, hardware is required to include door handles. Just as with doors, handles have a long history although these were first manufactured during the mid-19th century in America. The first handle was shaped like an egg and today, they are still found in many homes, especially older homes. Interestingly, because of the way this type of door handle is grasped, it has proved to be the easiest to open.
